about

Inspired by the enchanting celebrations in Zimbabwe in 1994, 'Mafaro eZimbabwe', which translates into 'The Joy of Zimbabwe' in the Shona language, is a heartfelt tribute to the joy and unity found in the rich and diverse culture of Zimbabwe, and to KTO's Zimbabwean teachers and her profound connection to the Zimbabwean community that has nurtured her musicianship for decades.

The album’s tracks are divided into “Roots”, more intimate, acoustic songs with Kelly and her teachers from Zimbabwe, and “Branches”, made with the San Francisco Bay Area group, The KTO Project, and other musicians from Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya with a wonderful explosion of energy and human joy, weaved in the spirit of Zimbabwe.

The album also counted on the presence of KTO’s husband, Salani Wamkanganise and guitarist/producer Zivanai Masango to celebrate the love of mbira music, mhande drumming, ndebele choral music, jiti songs, and soukous-inspiration in Zimbabwe while conveying messages of unity, love, and celebration.

'We are stirring the music, and singing loud! We move with sweet positive words coming from the innermost depth of our hearts! With this music as a catalyst, we are positively moving ahead!'

Following the success of the captivating singles 'Mafaro eZimbabwe' and 'Komborerai Mafaro', which achieved features in significant international radios, the album promises to take listeners on a mesmerizing journey through the vibrant rhythms and soul-stirring melodies that have become KTO's signature sound and will leave an indelible mark on your soul, as it did on her in 1994 when her life-changing and musical adventure began, and when she came across the true power of music as a universal language.

Since then, KTO’s music has fused African diaspora traditions, crafting a unique and danceable sound with master musicians, and promoting unity and positive change, inspiring audiences worldwide. With lush vocals and powerful rhythms, she truly bridges cultures effortlessly, as praised by African-American musician and cultural historian, Linda Tillery.

You can join the celebration of the Zimbabwean spirit with the incredible songs from ‘Mafaro eZimbabwe’ on November 10th, to witness with the KTO Project the power of music to heal, unite, and bring happiness to our lives.
